This piece is part of my "Beautiful Scars" collection. The series involves a variety of trees, up close and focused on areas where the limbs have been cut off. This came about as a result of a surgery I recently had. A series of laparoscopic incisions were made. Though small, they added more scars to a stomach that already had a large scar on it.
Some might think of my scars as a disfigurement or defect, but it got me thinking about how my scars are evidences of many years lived, experiences I’ve had, things I’ve overcome. If you’ve lived long enough, you too probably have a collection. I wanted to translate the beauty that can come from scars into my art.
I have created a collection of trees whose limbs have been cut off, creating unique scars of their own. As they’ve healed, they have turned into shapes and designs that have made them interesting, one of a kind and beautiful. The titles of these paintings are descriptions of attributes we can acquire through experiencing trials.
